I'm beginning to think the books I like least lead to the best discussions:) SO much fun toasting to Pope Joan with an enormous thunder/lightning clap joining us. The storm setting and the intimate table made for great discussion.
Catherine---I loved your stories, especially about the use of guilt in classroom management! You have the best deadpan deliver: Marva, arriving late and answering whether she believed there was a Pope Joan: "No, not really. What did you all think?" Catherine: "We all said yes, absolutely."
I'm tempted to dress as a man & visit Back of Beyond to see if Karen can spot any "tells" of femininity;-)
I saw there was an earlier movie version of Pope Joan in the 70s starring Liv Ullman: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pope-joan/
I have the impression the new Pope Joan hasn't been released in the US yet, but if one of you finds it, let us know. And---tentatively keep in mind a Thursday night in September at Slickrock Cinemas to see "The Help"!
It was a fun read, but yeah, historical romance makes my eyes roll. That's the great thing about our group---diversity of tastes and opinions. I love it!

So sad I didn't make it!!! Deirdre, are you saying you didn't like Pope Joan? I LOVED it. And yes, I agree, absolutely. =)
