The Paris Wife

So at least two of us would have married Hemingway, despite his reputation.

What a fun book club! It was my pleasure to host and I'm so glad that most of you liked the book. I loved it, if I didn't make that clear. I did forget to mention, I walked by his and Hadley's apartment in Paris several times, and stayed in roughly the same part of town, strolling around the same areas. Here are a couple photos:

And here are some photos from our meeting. I'm happy to say we killed three bottles of French wine and about 5 bottles of San Pellegrino! Thanks to CeCe for driving everyone, Marva for the yummy toffee, Deirdre for trying to bring strawberries and everyone else for coming!

Mindy, thanks for the delicious spread and yummy wine! I liked the discussion even more than the book, and your passion for it the most!

For those looking to read a little Hemingway, here's a link to his short story (only 3 pages), "Hills Like White Elephants":

It's a good example of his understated, "what you leave out is as important as what you leave in" style. I'd love to discuss it if anyone reads it:)

Also...I just read that HBO is doing a series on Hem and his third wife, with Clive Owen playing him.

Lastly, I liked this quote from Hadley, found in an article about The Paris Wife in the Guardian:

After Hemingway, Richardson found love and contentment with her second husband, Paul Mowrer, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, and the two were married for nearly 40 years until Mowrer's death in 1971. She died eight years later. When asked in a rare interview if she was ever tempted to return to the famous friends she knew when she was Mrs Hemingway, Richardson simply said: "No. I think I wanted something real."

Thank you Mindy...so fun:)

Thanks for the link above Deirdre, I'll definitely check it out.

A little tidbit I forgot to share, I read that of Ernest's four wives, Hadley was the only one that wasn't a journalist...
