The Road: epic, science-fiction, gothic or horror story?

This essay by Michael Chabon, originally from the NYT Book Review, decides it's horror, but seeing how Chabon reached that conclusion is an enjoyable read.

I love Chabon---anyone else?

Just a reminder---and thanks to you already doing so---to close your posts with your name, since those of us reading in our email box can't see who was logged in/who wrote it.

Thanks, Deirdre
Netflix has The Road the movie. I haven't watched it yet, but I will try before the meeting. I'll check with Marva with the date and time of the next meeting. Thanks, Cath

Finally here and posting :)

Hi Ladies...I finally have a moment to post! The blog looks great!

I just started reading 'The Road' ... anyone know if it was it made into a movie? If I remember correctly, I started the film and chose to stop watching it because stories like this (disturbing, depressing, etc) stay with me for a long time. We'll see how the book goes. If I can get through it, I know I'll want to talk about it. Hooray for book club :) -----CeCe

That was fun at Tara's last night....we should have taken a picture! I'm excited to start our next pick, THE ROAD! We do carry it at the bookstores, but if it's not in stock we can order it and offer 20% discount. Eric has NOT read THE ROAD, so I think we're going to both read it. It's great for me to be in this club and be presented the perfect opportunity to read different things! Thanks, everybody! ~Karen

Oscar Predictions

Any other movie-crazy fans out there? In my family growing up, The Academy Awards were our Super Bowl night, with lots of appetizers and everyone throwing a dollar into a hat with their predictions. All the money ($11!) went to whomever guessed the most winners correctly.

It was only when I was older that I learned a lot of people watch the Oscars for fashion, or celebrity-spotting. We were oblivious to most of that---we watched for the montages of old favorites and saw it as an extension of our family's celebration of storytelling.

Now, with kids of our own, we're lucky to see five movies a year in a theater. Of course, I hadn't seen them all as a kid either, so that never stops me from rooting for favorites or making my best guesses. Thanks to Redbox, we've seen all but "Black Swan" from the Best Picture category this year.

You can print out your own predictions here: http://awardswatch.fandango.com/2011/assets/pdf/fandangooscarsballot.pdf

And you can put your hat in the ring for prizes (top prize $100,000) if you can out guess Chicagoan Roger Ebert here:
http://mubi.com/oscars

And the NYT has their own contest too at http://oscars.nytimes.com/ballot/category/best-picture

So plan on popping corn on Sunday night and enjoy the show!

Water for Elephants

Seriously? Christopher Waltz instead of Javier Bardem. What were they thinking? They need someone like Burt Lancaster to explain how they could all be seduced by August, someone with a commanding physical presence as well as a menacing undertone.

Note to Hollywood: next time you're casting a novel, check in with our book club first!

If you are a bit movie-obsessed like me (or even a normal fan), check back this week for an Oscar prediction contest on the blog .Look forward to seeing all of you @ Tara's this week!
